The Lares Trek and Short Inca Trail is an excellent alternative 5-day trek to Machu Picchu. This trek goes through to authentic andean communities that keeps their traditions and lifestyle since times of the Inca empire. See thatched-roof houses made from stone and surrounded by hundreds of llama and alpaca herds. Observe locals weaving alpaca garments with rustic techniques. Be in contact with andean people, while you hike through blue greenish lagoons, snow-capped mountains and amazing wildlife. Combine this fantastic folkloric and scenic hike in the Lares region with the amazing landscapes and Inca ruins on the short Inca trail to Machu Picchu. On the 1st day you will trek through the beautiful Cuncani region and arrive at the picturesque little town of Kiswarani. On the 2nd day you will enjoy the beautiful views of the 7 waterfalls of Kiswarani, the beautiful Colalay lagoon, you will reach the highest point of the lares trek, from where you will observe many lakes of blue and greenish colors and with a little luck some specimens of the Andean condor. During the 3rd day visit a local family in the small town of Cancha Cancha and then descend to the beautiful sacred valley of the Incas. In the afternoon visit the panoramic Inca barns of Pinkuylluna and sleep in the last living Inca town of Ollantaytambo. On the 4th day hike through the amazing landscapes of the cloud forest of the short Inca trail and explore the Inca ruins of Wiñaywayna and Chachabamba. By sunset arrive at the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu and get your first postcard photos. On the fifth day, you will return to Machu Picchu and explore the Inca citadel from corner to corner and will also have a 3-hour guided tour. In the afternoon you will return by train to Cusco where they will arrive around 7 pm.
